Choosing your wedding cake can be a very exciting time during your wedding planning, however it can also be a time of great stress and worry for you both (although most commonly it is the bride who has the picture in her mind of her perfect wedding cake. Choosing the right wedding cake can be important to the theme of your day, can bring together the look and feel you are aiming for and most importantly it needs to taste great! There are various options for getting a wedding cake designed and made, we have produced a list of tips to bear in mind, below.

Once you chose your wedding cake maker, ensure that any ideas you have are taken into consideration. A good wedding cake maker will offer you advice and guidance, but it should always be towards what you want, and if you haven’t got a clue here are a few tips:

  1. Try to fix a budget and let your wedding cake maker know what it is. There is nothing more soul destroying than to decide on a 4 tier wedding cake only to find out that it’s way more than you intended paying for it.
  2. Look at lots of designs and ask if you can see any books that the wedding cake maker has that may be of assistance to you
  3. Chose a shape for your wedding cake. Heart shaped is very popular, but you may prefer to go for something different
  4. Chose a main colour (usually to match your wedding dress) and a secondary colour, (again, usually the one that your attendants are in).
  5. Next, calculate how many guests you are inviting and order a wedding cake that will cater for all of them. Your wedding cake maker will guide you on this one, but I think a piece approximately 1 inch x 2 inches in sponge is a nice size, so if you are ordering a 10 inch x 10 inch wedding cake that will comfortably cut into 50 pieces. Fruit wedding cake can be cut smaller, so more pieces can be cut from the same size wedding cake. Don’t forget to send a piece to all those wedding guests who can’t make it.
  6. Now decorate your wedding cake. There are so many different designs to choose from, so make sure you look at all your options before deciding.
  7. Ask if the wedding cake can be delivered and, if so, if there is any extra charge for it. This takes some of the pressure off the bride and groom at an otherwise very hectic part of the wedding run-up.
  8. Make sure that the wedding cake stand is hired. Most wedding cake decorators charge for the use of the stand and it is your responsibility to ensure it is returned safely to the wedding cake decorator; otherwise your deposit will not be returned.
  9. Ask if you can view the wedding cake a couple of days prior to the big day. That way you can ensure that the finished product is just to your liking. You will be way too busy on the day to take a good look at your work of art.

Hopefully these will be of help to your when choosing your wedding cake.

Till next time.

Kind regards
