Firstly, I think it’s always nice to have the icing in the same colour as the bride’s Wedding Dress, which is usually white, ivory or cream. If the bride's Wedding Dress is in any other colour consider having the trimmings i.e. ribbon, flowers, decorations etc in that colour. Alternatively the colour of the bridesmaid’s outfit can be used instead.
Next decide on the shape of the Wedding Cake. You really can have any shape of Wedding Cake you like but the main shapes are round, square, heart-shape, rectangle, oval, petal and hexagonal. Any good cake maker can adjust the basic shape to suite your requirements, so if cutting a circle into 'ying and yang' shapes is what you want, so be it! Or maybe a fairytale castle!
Wedding Cakedo you want? Fruit, sponge, carrot, chocolate, walnut……? With so many types of Wedding Cake to choose from it really is difficult, but take the guests tastes into consideration and it will certainly narrow it down. Nowadays most modern brides prefer sponge to fruit, but with some guests still preferring the traditional fruit cake consider having a mixture of cakes to suite every taste. At this stage you can also decide how many tiers you want. This will mainly depend on the number of guests, so don’t look at 4 or 5 tier wedding cakes when there are only 20 people attending the wedding breakfast. Alternatively, a small 2 tier wedding cake won’t satisfy the needs of 300 guests.
After that you need to decide on the decorations. Flowers are still very popular and these can be in silk, fresh or sugar paste. Consider what type of flowers you are using for the rest of the wedding and chose something similar for the wedding cake. Alternatively you can consider feathers, butterflys, hearts, ribbons, infact anything that takes your fancy. Maybe you can match the decorations up to the theme of your wedding, especially if it’s unusual.
After all that there are now so many unusual wedding cakes to choose from. Something that is becoming very popular is the cup-cake version. With this you can also have a small wedding cake to ensure the bride and groom have a wedding cake to cut in the traditional way. Chocolate cakes are delicious, but remember that not all your guests will like chocolate, and if the weather is very hot and the cake hasn’t been cared for properly it may melt.
As you can tell, we are very passionate about our cakes. We hope you are equally passionate about yours.
Happy choosing!
