How important is the ring?

Getting Engaged and getting married are hugely important in anyone's life. But how important is the ring?

It all depends on whether you are going to propose with a ring - or buy one afterwards. Think about what the person you are proposing to would want. A number of my friends who have proposed to their girlfriends have not had a ring as they knew that their prospective wives would want to choose their own.

However, there is something truly magical about having a ring (in a ring box) in your pocket to pull out and flip open at the perfect moment. And believe me, the surprise in your girlfriend's face is worth it! Its definitely a personal decision whether your proposal is planned or spontaneous and then how do you choose the perfect engagement ring?

Each bride loves to show off her engagement ring. As soon as someone gets engaged people flock to see the engagement ring, so it has to be the right one! You might be thinking that its what the ring represents that is important, and you are absolutely right. But, this engagement ring is going to stay on your wife's finger forever - no pressure then!

Firstly, set a budget. Traditionally it used to be 3 months wages on an engagement ring - you don't have to stick to this now. Be realistic, spend what you can afford.

Secondly, look at the colour jewelery that she currently wears, particulaly any rings that she wears. Silver? Gold? Platinum? You need to go with what she likes - she might not suit gold (in her opinion).

Choosing the stone is more difficult - Diamonds are always a favorite, clean and sparkly! Be open to what she likes. You should know her well enough to have some vague idea of what you think she might like? Alternatively go with a diamond solitaire if you have any doubt - then it all comes down to the quality of the diamond. At this point get help from a professional to make sure that you really do find a selection of Beautiful Engagement Rings to choose from.

Think about how you want to propose - in her favorite restaurant? On the balcony at night on holiday? In the privacy of your own home? Maybe send her flowers at work with the card saying 'Marry me???', or how about a little wrapped up box on the tree? Just remember to make it special!

Please, Please don't do it by text message or email - in person is a far better starting point for ant marriage.

Also, think about whether to ask your Father in law to be for his daughters hand, or her mum if you think its more appropriate. Some brides love their Dads to be asked, other hate it - so think about what your girlfriend would want.

Finally, decide whether to do it on one knee - a little traditional maybe but guaranteed to make your girlfriend realise that you are for real and not joking ... her face will be a picture you'll cherish forever! After all, the engagement ring is only part of getting engaged!

Good luck!
