Hi Dave,
I think taking your Girlfriend away for Valentines Weekend to propose in incredibly romantic and I'm sure that after 11 years it will be a wonderful surprise.
But where to go?
I'd look at somewhere a little special - travelling on 15th Feb 2008 and returning on 17th Feb 2008.
I've had a look round for you and based your trip on flights from Gatwick, this can of course be changed to site your closest airport. and this may well effect the price.
So, How about Venice? It depends of course on your budget but our friends at Expedia can offer 4 star hotel with breakfast and flights on British Airways for £287* per person (based on 2 people sharing a double room) in the Hotel Carlton and Grand Canal. An 18th Century Building that looks beautiful, and is recommended by Expedia.
Or if you don't fancy Flying - Go by Eurostar to Paris!
Expedia can offer 4 star hotel with breakfast and travel on the Eurostar for £273* per person (based on 2 people sharing a double room) in the Hotel K and K Hotel Cayre St Germain des Pres. A 19th Century building, that even has a Gym! This trip involves getting on the Eurostar at St.Pancras and travelling to Paris by train.
Or if you fancy pushing the boat out and going all out for the 5 star hotel. What about Prague? Travelling from Gatwick (15th - 17th Feb again), Flying with British Airways and staying at the Ambassador Zlatá Husa, this hotel is in an ideal location to explore the City. This is based on 2 people sharing a Superior room and includes Breakfast.
This one is definitely my favorite and Expedia can offer it at £278* per person (with a special discount) a grand total of £555. 5 Star accommodation for a bargain price!
Don't forget that you'll need Travel Insurance for both of you. And remember to check that both passports are valid. If you are going by plane, remember to book Airport Parking in advance too!
In terms of actually proposing, whether you get down on one knee is up to you. Some do some don't. Think about whether she'd like you to ask her Dad or Mum for her hand, again, its down to personal preference.
You should say what comes into your head, it can be as much or as little as you want to say. Remember to say the magic words ' Will you marry me?". And pick a romantic place .... over Dinner, waking her up to a diamond ring on the pillow next to her with a note saying ' Will you marry me' whilst you're singing in the shower! Whatever you think she'd like.
The same follows with rings really. Some choose the ring and use it as part of the proposal. Other prefer to let her choose a ring once you get back from your weekend away. Personally, I was proposed to with a ring, in its little box ... wow .... I was completely amazed! You might like to check out the January sales to find a suitable Engagement Ring.
I hope this gives you some ideas on where to go ..... and Good Luck, let me know how it goes!
