I Do or I will?

I was watching a very romantic and dramatic 1970's film last night. It was one of those, where the tall, dark and handsome man meets a lovely blonde girl, he then dates her for a bit, meets her parents and sweeps her off her feet. And then come the wedding bells, where they all say 'I do'. Its all sunny and they don't seem to have to worry about any of the planning!

Its was lovely to watch but it got me thinking back to the day that I made my Wedding vowels. My Wedding took place in a church (CofE) and the ceremony was performed by a vicar (a close friend of the family - I might add. He'll be offended otherwise!) But to my knowledge I didn't say 'I do', I'm sure I said 'I will'. I've even been hunting for the DVD of our fabulous day to check ....

I always thought (having watched all those romantic films over the years) that it was the custom to say 'I do'. But to avoid any confusion .... best idea is to check with Jan our fantastic Resident Reverend. So, Resident Reverend - Is it 'I do' or 'I will'???

Hi Elle
You must have been watching an American film. In the Church of England service we say "I will"

I often explain this if I take a wedding: It's safe to assume that the couple DO love each other or presumably they wouldn't choose to marry. But the question "Will you love..." is a potent one as it points out to us that we can choose to love someone even when they are being grumpy or offhand. When they are sick or they feel that the world is against them.

Sometimes it requires a lot of effort - so that is what the vows/ promises are about. Promising that you WILL make the effort to love each other in good times and in bad and not be too eager to give it up. That's what keeps people together - holding on in there.

And of course it's always easier to love a person who cherishes you - good word and a well recommended practice. Love is not a feeling it's an act of your will.

Hope this helps
Jan x
