It's great to find beautiful things that have been ethically sourced. Here's Karina Anne with a range of gems that don't cost the earth - whichever way you look at it...
Working from her studio in rural Suffolk, Karina Anne makes jewellery using premium quality materials such as A-grade freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystal, handmade lampwork beads and lots of fair trade silver.
Karina steers clear of using gemstones in her designs as it is difficult to guarantee that these have been sourced ethically: “It is not just the mining of gemstones that is damaging to the environment” says Karina, “but the grinding of the stones to make them into beads, can be hazardous too”.
Her new collection of sparkling Swarovski crystal earrings and necklaces are now on her website www.karinaanne.co.uk These pieces are made with crystals and fair trade sterling silver and come in a delicious mix of colours: green and gold; fuchsia and garnet; shades of sapphire, mint and amethyst.
The designs are flexible and perfect for a wedding day: “I wanted to give people a choice with two designs of earrings: one for lovers of long and elegant styles and the other for those who favour short and funky” says Karina. “I also thought that the bride could wear one style and the bridesmaids could wear the other, so that they are co-ordinated, but different”. There are also necklaces to match each design.
