How much like a marriage ceremony is a blessing?

Lucy O'Neill has emailed NewlyWeds-UK with her question for our Resident Reverend. Lucy, Jan, our Resident Reverend will reply as soon as she can!.

Hope you can reassure me, I'm getting married at a registry office on 12th July and having a Service of Blessing at my future in-laws parish church on 14th July. My question is; how much like a marriage ceremony is a blessing?

I would of loved to get married in the church but for various reasons we were not able to. My registry office wedding ceremony is just the formalities and the church wedding blessing was going to be the biggie, my son was going to give me away and we were going to have traditional wedding music but after looking on the web it doesn't seem like this is the done thing. I hope you can reassure me that i can have the wedding of my dreams and wont have to miss out because of things that have happened in the past.

Thank you in advance

Hi Lucy
The good news is that you should be able to have the service of your dreams. Once you have done the formalised bit there are no legal restrictions and you can have a service of blessing anywhere.

So come down the aisle with your son - no problem - wear the fab dress and exchange some meaningful words. There is a service suggested in the pastoral services book but do go and chat with the Vicar and discuss how to tweak it/personalise it wherever appropriate.

This is a new start for you and I wish you every blessing.
