At last it's Friday

There is a new and eminently sensible trend for getting married on Fridays.

As far as the Church of England is concerned you've always been able to get married on any day of the week. Even on a Sunday as long as it doesn't clash with the times of our Worship services. The only legal requirement is to be married in daylight hours. I think this stems back to the time when brides covered their faces with veils and everyone needed to see exactly who was marrying whom - especially the groom.

There is a Biblical precedent for a sneaky father-in-law tricking a gullible young man into marrying his beloved's older, Ugly Sister. Fortunately for him (though not for the girls) he was eventually allowed to marry both of them - which is illegal nowadays, thankfully. In this country anyway...

Traditionally weddings have been on Saturdays - presumably because many people work Monday to Friday. But sometimes this has meant that couples have been faced with very long waits to secure the reception venue of their choice. Some hotels are taking bookings 3 years in advance. I can't imagine waiting three years just to use a venue at a premium price because their bookings suggest that they can charge through the nose. Or to get the services of a particular chef - he'd have to rustle up a mean Coq-au-vin after all that wait!

Friday weddings make perfect sense and I'm sure this is good news for everyone involved in the wedding process - from photographers to car hire, hairdressers to hat-hirers. And no-one has to miss the cup final.

I'm sure this idea will take off. Whatever day you choose we hope it's a great one.
