Music to make you smile

One of our most popular leaflets at Wedding Shows is the 'Suggested Hymns and Readings'. It's really difficult to choose appropriate hymns (my husband wanted 'We Plough the Fields and Scatter', and 'Fight the Good Fight!'. But I heard one today that made me chuckle.

Schools are currently being urged to acknowledge St George's day and our local Primary school responded by selecting and rehearsing hymns the children would enjoy singing at this week's assemblies.

One of the teachers is planning her wedding and wants the choir to sing during the signing of the register. All the staff were making suggestions but struggling to think of a song that the little ones could manage.They decided to ask the children.

The unanimous vote came back....

When a knight won his spurs, in the stories of old,
He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold;
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand
For God and for valour he rode through the land.

No charger have I, and no sword by my side,
Yet still to adventure and battle I ride,
Though back into storyland giants have fled,
And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead.

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed
'Gainst the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed;
And let me set free, with the sword of my youth,
From the castle of darkness the power of the truth.

Love it!
Let's face it girls - who doesn't want to marry a knight in shining armour?

When my husband and i got married last year, we did not want to go down the traditional path of having hymns sung at our wedding. We did not have any favourite hymns but had hundreds of love songs that we adored, and the words in songs such as, 'You Raise Me Up' by Westlife and 'I knew i loved you before i met you' by Savage Garden meant much more to us.
We discussed the option with the Reverened to go for popular songs as opposed to traditional hymns, at first we was not keen on the idea but when we explained why, he let us go with it. He was impressed that we werent choosing the 'pop' songs because they were 'funky' (his words, not ours!) but because we had listened to the words, and they struck a strong chord with us.
