Apart from the colours and hedgerow foraging, the other reason I love the Autumn is that it is Wedding Show season and I absolutely love the glitz and glamour of it all. The NEC was particularly spectacular for me because I was onstage alongside Jackie and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.
At The National Wedding Shows they had a competition to win a wedding. A very sweet young couple from Barnstaple in Devon had won. They were given designer outfits and the bride was given a hairdresser and make up artist for the morning. They had a wedding in a local hotel then arrived at the NEC with all their guests. I joined them on stage to say some prayers and then the Llewelyn-Bowens presented them with champagne and a honeymoon voucher for 8 days in Mauritius. The whole thing was accompanied by singing from the London Gospel Community Choir.
Backstage at events like this is a bit of an eye opener with models dashing about changing outfits and people crimping hair and powdering noses. I even got a mini makeover and spent the day trying not to get dishevelled before my stint in the limelight - which was filmed for the Wedding Channel.
I've always admired the flamboyant Laurence from 'Changing Room' days on TV and his wife is absolutely gorgeous. They were very relaxed and friendly but there was still a sense of being among celebs.
At least I didn't blow my cool completely and ask for their autographs. As a child I was an avid autograph hunter and carried my book everywhere. I once got grumpy Albert Tatlock from Coronation Street - but my star coup was the whole bunch of Herman's Hermits. My grandmother chased them down the road on the Isle of Man with a tennis racket and asked them to sign the handle. Big dilemma because every time I used it to play I wore those precious signatures off a little more.
I think being starstruck must be in my genes because my mother rang me yesterday all of a twitter. The Bishop of Manchester had visited the Sheltered housing complex and made a bit of a fuss of her for being my mum. I'll swear she was swooning at him and she's now got his picture propped up in the lounge!
This weekend is Manchester Central's turn for the UK Wedding Show and I can't wait - though I'm not expecting to have to blow the dust off my autograph book. On the other hand, the Bishop might show up and I could chase after him with my mother's walking stick to see if he'd be willing to deface the handle. It'd make her day.
