Dear Reverend,

I would like to take my (future) wife's name, rather than her taking mine. I know this is unusual, but it is possible?

Could you talk me through the process?

Thank you,

Tom Charles

Hi Tom
A church wedding doesn't transfer a name. In fact the bride signs the certificate with her maiden name. This is often the last time she signs it - though a woman can keep her single name legally.

You will need to change your name by deed poll. Have a chat with the Vicar though as I suspect that Banns will need to be read out in your current name - the purpose of banns is to enable anyone who knows you to object to the marriage if they have a legal reason to do so.

There seems to be lots of websites to help you change your name.
warm regards
jan
