Dear Reverend
Just wondered if you could clear up some conflicting advice we have been given.

My fiance and I are both English however we've been living in Australia for 3 years now. We are getting married in 2008 and hoping to marry in the C of E church where I grew up which is still my parents' parish church. I can be back 15 days before the ceremony but as my fiance will only be back a week or so before we've been told we need to apply for a special licence. However, someone else has advised if one of you is in the UK for 15 days before the ceremony we can apply for a common licence.

Which is correct? Hope you can help.
Thank you & kind regards, Elaine

Hi Elaine
The wording is ambiguous as it relates to 'usual place of residence'. This suggests to me that a visitor from overseas needs to apply for a special licence.

If you were a student coming home from Uni (your usual place during term) to your home - then common licence would be the thing.
Have a chat with the diocesan registrar for your parents parish but that would be my understanding.
Hope this helps
warmly
Jan
