Dear Resident Reverend
Neither myself nor my fiancé want to get married where we grew up and worshipped when we were younger. We have moved around England quite a lot in the last few years and live a long way from our family. We have decided to get married in Edinburgh as it’s our favourite city and has really good transport links for family and friends.
However we are both confirmed Anglicans and we have no connections in Edinburgh or live there and so don't worship there so I don't know if it’s possible to get married in the Church of England way.
Can we get married in a Church of Scotland ceremony and what’s the difference in religion terms and would ministers of Church of Scotland marry us? Do the same restrictions apply to the Church of Scotland as to the Church of England, i.e. do we have to worship there before the wedding and need connections?
Thanks

Hi Gem
Wherever you want to get married there will probably be Residentiary Requirements - this usually means living there for 15 days. But the rules are different in Scotland and I''m not sure to be honest (As a Church of England minister I can marry people in England or Wales but not Scotland).
The Episcopal Church is the one in Scotland that is linked to the Anglican Church (Church of England). So that would be the nearest equivalent.
Why not contact both them and the Church of Scotland head offices and have a chat about possibilities.
Hope this clarifies things and I'm sorry not to be more help.
