Dear Elle ...how to keep down the cost of the dress? ... I need help from the online Wedding Planner

Dear Elle,
Ok, so here is my dilema. I have found a dress that I love. Its £750 in the shop but online in the us its $689 (approx £350) thats £400 less!! My question is do you have any idea how much it cost to ship a dress from america and how much import duty i would face (rough estimate would be helpful) I'm thinking poss £200 which still leaves me with a poss £200 saving so then I just have to figure out whether its worth the risk!!Obviously If it doesnt fit right or the length is wrong I don't have the support of a shop to do the alterations but £200 is £200 and I'm very tempted. Your thoughts???
K

Dear K,
What a dilema! Finding your perfect dress is a big enough task, so to actually know what you want is great.
I would be very cautious to having a dress shipped over. I know many a bride who has done it and been very happy but it can be difficult to change if the wrong size is delivered or its been damaged in transit, and unfortunately I have met a few too many brides who have need to buy another dress in the UK because the shipped in one just wasn't all that was promised.
Making a saving is the way to go when you are on a budget - but is it really worth it? If it is really your dream dress and no other dress will do, find out when the dress was introduced ... if its last season's stock or older it might be heading for the sale lines, where you can get a number of fabulous bargains especially if you know exactly what you are after. Try typing it into a search engine, you'll come up with a number of shops that stock it, some will bechepaer than others. I would avoid buying it from anywhere that you can't try it on before you leave the shop or premises because it could result in having to buy a whole another dress, especially if yuo have to take measurements yourself.
To free up that extra cash how about asking close friends or family to buy items for the wedding - the cake from your Grandparents or borrowing your tiara from a friend (its the something borrowed). You can still choose the items but it might just mean that you can reorganise the budget to find the extra cash and avoid the risk.
Its your decision of course, but be careful .... only take the risk if you can afford to lose it!
Good Luck, let me know how you get on!
Elle
