Who can perform the ceremony?

Dear Resident Reverend,

My fiancee and I are both committed Christians. Both of us have been students for the past four years and our regular church is in London, however as both of our families are from the Ipswich area we plan to get married in a church in Ipswich. My fiancee's Grandfather is a retired Reverend from a church in Surrey and I know that my wife to be would very much like her Grandfather to perform the ceremony on the day. What are the regulations for this in the CofE, does the Vicar of the Parish church have to perform the ceremony or is it possible for another Reverend to do it?

Thanks for your help.

Stuart

HI Stuart
What a lovely idea to ask your fiancee's Grandfather - it will make your wedding really special for everyone.

Here's the legal situation: The Vicar is the registrar but they can allow someone to take a wedding for them - though often they like to have some input themselves - or at least be present to make sure all is well.

I think usually a person stepping in like this would have a Licence themselves, or at least permission to officiate. So you may just need to get some sort of paperwork in place. But start by asking the Vicar and get an agreement in principal and then take it from there.

I'm sure you'll be able to arrange something that blesses everyone - especially Grandad!
Have a fab day
warm regards
Jan
