Banns and Moving House

Resident Reverend,

We are getting married in the church we regularly go to and therefore we are on the electoral roll but we need the banns read in the parish we currently live in. We have organised a meeting here in order to fill in forms but our house is up for sale and it is likely we will move sometime in the next 6 months (pre wedding) and move outside our current parish... what if we move and there is not enough time to have banns read in new parish?

Hi kcj
Banns last for 3 months so you would arrange for banns to be read on 3 consecutive Sundays before the wedding - but they are done fairly last minute as they can only be read within the 3 months prior to the wedding itself.

The traditional purpose of banns is for people who know you to speak up if they know you are already married to someone else - so it makes sense for them to be read in the parish where you have lived for some time. And you have them read in the place you live at the time that you 'lodge' them.

But if you do move house then presumably you'll have at least 3 weeks warning before the wedding and can organise with local clergy to read them there. Just gear up the new Vicar in advance that this might happen and you'll be fine.

Kind regards
Jan
