Can they marry in the Church of England?

Dear Jan ,

I wonder if you could help my sister . My sister is catholic and her fiance is Anglican. Due to the fact that her partner is divorced, they have been told they cannot be married in the catholic church.

As he is Anglican , can they be married in the church of England and does it have to be the parish he attends. This is causing a lot of strain for them as they both want a traditional wedding , and i was hoping i could help out by researching this option for them.

I would be grateful if you could be of assistance or at least point me in the right direction .
Thank you .

Can they marry in the Church of England?

What a lovely caring sister! The good news is that Yes they can marry in the Anglican church. We consider everyone to be a parishioner even if they attend other churches - so your sister can legally marry her fiance in a number of places. Take a look at the details for the new Marriage Measure which I've written about often on the site and you'll see that there are many options of venue for them

The slight complication is that Vicars have the right to say no to marrying divorcees, so they will need to ask around at the various churches to which they have qualifying links, but I'm sure they'll be able to arrange the wedding they long for.

Warm regards for a wonderful wedding day.
