My daughter and her english boyfriend are living in Sydney and plan to marry from home in gloucestershire in oct 2010. They will be in the UK for a fortnight in April. What are the rules of residency regarding a church marriage?
Do they have to both be resident in Gloucestershire for 7 nights as in a civil wedding? Or is it sufficient for the bride to be resident for a required period before banns can be read ?I should be most grateful for some clarification.
Thank you.

Hi Alison
Banns are only usually read when a person is resident in a parish - which is not the case for your daughter. If their visit had been closer to the wedding they could have applied for a Common Licence as they would have fulfilled the residency requirements.
However a Common Licence only lasts three months so I'm fairly confident that they will need to apply for a Special Licence, which needs to be sanctioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Your Vicar will be able to advise you on this and you may well be able to get started on this before April.
I hope this helps and you all have a wonderful wedding
warm regards
