Can I choose my vicar?

Hi,
I hope you can help me, we are planning on being married in a local Anglican church which is special to my fiance and I, we fulfil the criteria for having a connection to the parish so i cant see that there will be a problem there (the wedding wont be for about 3 years so its still in the planning stage).

The problem is the vicar of the parish we have chosen, I just don't like the man, for many and various reasons I won't go into here! And I wouldn't feel comfortable having him marry us.

I was wondering if it would be possible to have a different Anglican vicar from another parish conduct the ceremony?

Thank you,

Lizzie

Hi Lizzie,
This is a sensitive one - the incumbent (the Vicar in residence) is actually the registrar for that parish. Anyone else coming in would need to have the permission and goodwill of that Vicar.

Sometimes people do ask if a Vicar who's a family friend (or someone they have a particular relationship with) can conduct the service and most Vicars are OK with that.

3 years is a long time and people move on, so he may have left by the time you come to get married. Best to wait till nearer the time. But in the meantime why not establish a relationship with your own local Minister and you may find that the local church feels more like home - and maybe even the place you want to get married in.

kind regards

Thanks very much Jan,
I did have a particular Vicar in mind, so its a relief that it is a possibility to have him marry us, but as you say, three years is a long time so we will just have to wait and see what comes our way.
Thank you again,
Lizzie
