Having Banns read

Hi Jan,

We're getting married in September in a small chapel in Edinburgh castle. My fiancé and I were christened C of E, although we don't go to church. We both live in Scotland, and we have a military Padre marrying us in the Chapel. I am confused as to whether we need to get our banns read and if so, were would we do this, as there aren't any C of E church's in our area. If you could advise us on this I would very greatful.

Many thanks Yvonne

Hi Yvonne
I'm really sorry but I'm not sure about the rules in Scotland - Church of England licenses cover England and Wales and Scottish rules are different. If the wedding is actually a Civil wedding then banns wouldn't be appropriate wherever you live.

But if the chapel is actually licensed as a church then it should have a resident Minister. Either the minister or your Padre should be able to advise as they'll need to know the legal requirements before carrying out the ceremony.

Sounds gorgeous. Hope you have a lovely day
