Check out the deb's advice

Having been assured by the Observer that 'Camilla Morton knows everything. Everything' I decided to dip into her 'Year in High Heels' manual to see if there is any advice about weddings. Naturally there it all was under July....

Those who enjoyed 'How to walk in high heels' will be glad to know that Camilla waxes lyrical on the subject of 'How to get a ring on your finger' and 'how to get hitched'. She then goes into great detail about Setting the budget (but beware - her must-haves exceed £25,000) and lots of helpful information about orders of service, wedding lists etc

The church with an attitude

I've just spent two days with the Church of England Weddings Project team thinking how the Church can improve our welcome to Brides and Grooms. As 'Investors in Weddings' we would really love it if you felt you wanted to stick with us when the last bit of confetti has finally composted itself on the church rose bed. Hence my poll below: I really want to know - What do Wedding Couples Want?

February 20, 2008

When you imagine your wedding, do you see a happy, laughing couple stepping out from the church porch, confetti swirling all around? And what is the sound in the background? Probably the joyful pealing of bells, ringing out to announce to the world that a marriage has taken place. Bells have been used for centuries to proclaim the union of man and wife and are still a fundamental part of the traditional wedding day.

Fewer and fewer people in the UK are tying the knot, but those that do are more likely to go abroad than ever before.

Italy remains one of the favourite destinations for couples, especially for celebrities, so Love & Lord, the Tuscan wedding experts, are spreading their wings and offering the dream location of the Amalfi coast for the first time.

The Wedding Music that you choose for your Wedding Ceremony should be personal to you and mean something. What you want to walk down the aisle to and walk out married to depends on the type of ceremony you have chosen and where it is taking place.

Well I'm still glowing from THAT wedding!
And Newlyweds-UK blogger Val Hill (AKA Mrs Cardigan) is now a newly wed herself. It was a gorgeous sunny day and the church was beautifully lit with the late summer sunshine, the glow from the candlelight we all passed around during our simple prayers and by the warmth of the blessings and good wishes of friends and family. Perfect.

Val looked gorgeous, and sweetly nervous - I thought she might have to say her vows by semaphore as she was struggling to speak but her arms were shaking. But her lovely husband was as steady as a rock and it was an enormous privilege for me to conduct the service, though I confess to being nervous myself - especially as the best man was the beloved now-retired Vicar under whom I was a Curate.

I'm having the weekend away from NewlyWeds-UK towers as I'm off to a gorgeous village church in the Lake District to marry our bride-to-be blogger Mrs Cardigan. Or to be more precise - I'm officiating at her wedding - they'll be marrying each other. It'll be a simple, cosy wedding ceremony with close family and friends.

I've just been reading about the Chinese couple who wanted to call their baby @. They said that they felt this signified their love for the child.

It got me thinking about the whole issue of names. It's something that couples want to discuss about the wedding service, particularly if they are widely known by a shortened version of their Christian name. Would Granny be offended if I'm referred to as Dave/Bob/Kate for example? Because actually that is who we are to each other!

They say everyone has their 15 minutes of fame in life. I added about 15 seconds to my tally a couple of Sundays ago when I appeared briefly on the Heaven & Earth show in a pre-recorded interview filmed in church.

The subject was the availability of on-line divorces and I said lots of things to camera but most of them were obviously deemed not sensible or appropriate for that particular programme. Ah well. Maybe I can say them here...

Laura Varney sent a message using the NewlyWeds-UK contact form

We are getting married in 7 weeks time and have not yet had the offical costing from our minister. He said 2 years ago when we booked it the charge was about £300 when do you usually pay this?

Friday brings a close to the working week, however the weddings questions continue, and NewlyWeds-UK seems to be the place to come with all your wedding questions, especially if you have religion, race, or citzenship issues... Hmmm I can see a dedicated section coming along!

Anyway on with the question...

Lucy O'Neill has emailed NewlyWeds-UK with her question for our Resident Reverend. Lucy, Jan, our Resident Reverend will reply as soon as she can!.

Hope you can reassure me, I'm getting married at a registry office on 12th July and having a Service of Blessing at my future in-laws parish church on 14th July. My question is; how much like a marriage ceremony is a blessing?

There are some weddings that will be engraved forever on the memory - for various reasons. Last Saturday's ceremony falls into that category...

The couple had said they didn't want any hymns in case it was 'too religious' and the Bride asked me on the phone how long the service would last. I must confess that I was beginning to wonder why they wanted a church wedding at all.

The plan was to have 2 Best Men, 1 grown-up Bridesmaid and 5 tiny flower girls - the eldest being the four year old daughter of the Bride & Groom and the youngest being their ten month old baby.

I whinge sometimes.
(OK I know you think all ministers are paragons of virtue and I hate to be the one to break it to you - but Vicars are not perfect.)

Anyway, I had been moaning to a colleague at the UK Wedding Show because I hardly ever get to officiate at weddings now that I'm not in regular parish ministry. He rather gallantly offered me the chance to cover two weddings for him. Greater love has no Vicar and all that... (though I suspect that the dates in question coincided with football matches or something good on telly).

I once heard a joke about a woman who prayed for the gift of 'tongues' (the ability to pray freely in other languages). Her husband was also fervently praying that she wouldn't get this gift as she had more than enough to say in English.

I'm always grateful that God gave me the ability to talk - though I think my husband, Garry, might agree with the husband in the joke. My job involves a lot of travelling and the journey to London is a great opportunity to chat with fellow passengers. Garry says you can tell the commuters from my carriage because they are virtually comatose by the time they stagger off the train at Euston. Cheek!

244,710 couples were married in 2005 in the UK, and according to the Office for National Statistics, this is down from 2004's figure of 273,070.

So is this 56,270 people who failed to find true love? Is it just that we are leaving it until later in life to get married? what's your opinion, please let us know by either adding a comment to this article, or by contacting us through the 'contact us' link
