Feast your senses at the UK's biggest "wedding department store"

From over the moon to the honeymoon, from your dream dress to the world's most romantic resorts - there's nothing quite like the National Wedding Show to help you make your big day everything you've imagined.

It's all laid out for you under one roof - dresses, groomswear, occasionwear, accessories, photography, flowers, honeymoon destinations, venues, cakes and much, much more. And the beauty of it is that you can you can see, touch, taste and try before you buy.

I've been asked to write an article for the Activate magazine about green events and where else could I go for inspiration but to NewlyWeds-UK Ethical weddings blogger Katie Fewings. She told me an inspirational story about Russell and Alexia who planned a fabulous Cornish green wedding

A personal weddingI love going to weddings (as you might imagine!) so I was really excited to be going to the wedding of an old school friend last weekend - especially as all my other school friends were coming along too!

Green bride and bridesmaidsI've been seriously debating what to do with my wedding dress over the last few weeks.

Following on from last week's post about the bridal bouquet, I'd say one of the fun bits about arranging your wedding is the task of making your chosen venue look pretty.

Let your imagination run riot when it comes to centrepieces, place names, table plans and the like; it’s a great opportunity to incorporate some of those eco-friendly and fair trade touches.

Go for vases filled with pebbles and water, or colourful fruit as centrepieces, let shells, pebbles or leaves serve as place names.

Traditionally, wedding flowers have a large and decorative role to play when it comes to weddings.

The bridal bouquet is certainly a much anticipated part of the white wedding, perhaps more for the throwing of it than for its arrangement! If you do decide to go for fresh wedding flowers, why not think about how you can minimise the environmental impact?

Oops! I missed my Newlyweds slot again yesterday - but I had a good excuse! We were filming a short piece about ethical and green weddings for the Sky Channel, Wedding TV.

So you've said "I do" but now it's time to come to the crux of the issue. What are you going to eat for your wedding breakfast? After endless wedding photos everyone is always desperate to get to the feasting and you don't want to disappoint.

Phew! It's been a busy couple of weeks - hence the lack of post last week - and it's all, in one way or another, been wedding related!

Last Monday's important engagement was actually not a chore at all - we were celebrating our second wedding anniversary at the excellent Due South restaurant on Brighton seafront. We also celebrated our first wedding anniversary there (oops, getting into a routine already!) but this time round we managed to bag ourselves a window seat looking straight out over the sea...so romantic!

One of the common complaints about weddings is that the wedding planning can be so bureaucratic and paper heavy!

For the ethical bride and groom, in these days of the worldwide web, there’s no excuse for not saving a few trees and getting some of that organising done online.

By Nature's Organic and Ethical Wedding List is turning white weddings green. From recycled and fair trade diningware to organic bed and bath linens each product is carefully screened for its eco and social credentials. By Nature will also match 10% of the total amount spent on each wedding list and give this money to the couple's chosen charity.

This week (a day late again, I apologise, Easter weekend has thrown me and I thought today was Monday!) I thought it was about time we talked about that cornerstone of any well-planned wedding: the venue.

Once you have the venue fixed, everything else seems to fall into place (well, almost!).

But of course, we're not talking about just any venue, we're looking for an ethical wedding venue...so what might that entail? For a few ideas, read on...

As we enter with trepidation the 2007 wedding season, you're probably, like us, being faced with a range of wedding gift lists to examine and dissect.

Yep, this week we're talking about the big one: 'the dress', THE DRESS!

Here comes the bride, all dressed in... what? What to wear?

All eyes will be on you, so you're probably looking for something a bit special but you're also thinking about the ethical and green credentials of your outfit too. Tricky! So what are your options?

Another week and another inbox full of questions from journalists wanting to get the lowdown on the growing interest in ethical and green weddings.

One of the questions I get asked most of all - and one you may well be asking yourself if you have just come across the concept of ethical weddings - is:

"Can one day really make a difference?"

March 12, 2007

Last week I promised to tell you how it all began so here it is, the story of Ethical Weddings, or rather the story so far as it is a long way from being finished.

The question of course is where to begin. I could start when I first met my (now) husband, sitting on the floor in a grimy corridor in a hall of residence in Sheffield asking the usual questions about where we were from and which A-Levels we had done?

I could start four years later when we finally realised we were “more than just friends”?
