There’s no getting away from the fact that getting married is an expensive business, with over £20,000 being the average spend for a UK wedding in 2008. The current credit crunch means that couples are finding it increasingly difficult to afford their dream day, with many either postponing their wedding, sacrificing what they really want for cheaper options, or starting married life with huge wedding debts.

However, with some careful planning you can still make savings and have the wedding of your dreams. London wedding planner Helen Carter offers her top tips on how to make the most of your wedding budget.

The Secret World of Wedding Planning

Ok, so you’ve heard the horror stories about the wedding planner that took over the preparations and left the bride wondering what on earth happened to her dream wedding. You know they’re expensive, unnecessary, and are only for brides that are rich, famous, or too lazy to plan their own wedding. So let me tell you something that may come as a surprise – it’s all a big myth!

Despite the increasing popularity and prominence of wedding planners, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the work we do. Be honest, how many times have you come across an advert for a wedding planner and thought “what do they actually do?” or “why on earth should I pay someone to plan my wedding when I can do it myself?”

Well, why not grab a cuppa (and a biscuit if you’re not already on the pre-wedding diet!), get yourself comfortable and let me take you inside the world of wedding planning...

I was watching a very romantic and dramatic 1970's film last night. It was one of those, where the tall, dark and handsome man meets a lovely blonde girl, he then dates her for a bit, meets her parents and sweeps her off her feet. And then come the wedding bells, where they all say 'I do'. Its all sunny and they don't seem to have to worry about any of the planning!

When it comes to your Wedding day, whether you are opting for a traditional or non-traditional day - you are probably being bombarded with advice from friends and family over when you cut the cake, when the Mother of Bride can remove her hat and if the Groom is allowed to remove his jacket before you sit down to the Wedding Breakfast.

So how do you know what the right Etiquette is?

In order to keep it all simple and enable it to be followed you might want to consider referring to a highly recommended book:

The planning stage of your wedding is an exciting time, spending a small fortune on wedding magazines, and trying to source blue champagne, to match that 'must have' blue cake; all perfectly natural requests for the planning bride!!! However, you may have also realised that all the decision making can be overwhelming, not to mention time consuming.

Until now local wedding fayres have offered limited choice due to venue space restrictions. The Suffolk Wedding Show has exclusive use of a fantastic spacious venue in the region, enabling us to offer you a whole new planning experience.

Dear Terry,

Thank you for your email. As posted on NewlyWeds-Uk.com on 28th December 2007.

Getting married is a costly business. You have been very sensible in determining your budget before planning the big day.

The cost of any Wedding really depends on the numbers you want to invite.

I would suggest that you opt for a small but intimate Wedding. Your Church will charge to get married there but if you just have the basic options you can keep the cost down. Alternatively you might like to opt for a Register Office instead?

Choosing the colours for your Wedding can be a very important decision. Particularly as you base most of the decisions for the big day on them, everything from the colour of the bridesmaids dresses to the Wedding flowers, its very important to get it right the first time!

Firstly consider the colours you like. If you love Orange put it on the list, equally though, if you hate Orange cross it off. Come up with your top 5 or 6 colours so you have some options to consider.

When you are planning a wedding its the bridal dress that costs the earth and is an extremely important part of any wedding day. Its not only the wedding dress that is important, the Groom's attire is equally important. There is no point having a bride in an amazing dress if the Groom looks like hes just rolled out of bed.

So, what does a modern day Groom need to think about when choosing what to wear?

With the average wedding costing in excess of £15,000, its a tall order for any couple looking to tie the knot. But your wedding doesn't have to cost this much, there are ways to achieve the wedding you want at a price that it suits your wedding budget. After all, the idea of starting a marriage up to your neck in debt because you wanted thrones and to arrive by helicopter isn't going to do your relationship any good.

After a glorious break in sunny Spain we're back! It was great to completely 'desconectar' (no internet, no computers) for a while...and it's taking a bit of getting used to being plugged in again (that's our excuse for not replying to any emails yet anyway!).

Have you ever wanted a totally unique wedding ceremony but felt you would welcome some advice on how to word it?

The British Humanist Association www.humanism.org.uk has published a book "Sharing the Future" which is packed full of ideas, practical tips, sample ceremonies and poems and prose for everyone who is planning a wedding. You can buy it directly from the BHA for £6.50 + postage.

It is also a great starting point to discuss with your local Humanist Celebrant, when creating your own personal ceremony.

The rising cost of nuptials prompted an article by Esther Rantzen in the Daily Mail this week. The title was an eye catching claim - 'A big wedding is the quickest way to the divorce court'.

Without wishing to be negative about the fancy trappings of the fairytale Big Day, I'm forced to agree that she does have a point. The sad fact is that some marriages do come unstuck before the wedding has even been paid for. And therein might well lie the problem.

I have been reminded that for those of you in Scotland who would like your own personal, non-religious ceremony in your own choice of location, there is a separate Humanist Society of Scotland, with a list of legal celebrants.

In 2006 the Humanist Society of Scotland conducted nearly 500 legal weddings and is now the fifth most popular wedding provider in the country.

It is the big day, everything is planned down to the last detail and everyone is praying that nothing goes wrong. But what if something does happen, what if the groom is a bit worse for wear or a wedding hair style starts to fall out?

Heres where the 'wedding survival kit' comes in, to help ensure any incidents or problems can be resolved quickly.

EnglishRose events is here to share the contents of that survival kit, so you can fully prepare for any eventuality:

How is the wedding planning going? Have you thought about sending out your wedding invitations yet?

Obviously you want your wedding invitations to look good - this is the first glimpse your wedding guests will have of the style of your wedding; will it be a contemporary wedding, a classical wedding, etc. However before you finalise your wedding invitation pack, it may be worth considering what extra information about your wedding, you include in the wedding invitation pack.

Below is the NewlyWeds-UK guide to wedding invitations.
